Thursday, Nov. 10Arun Gandhi

As the grandson of one of India’s (and the world’s) most inspiring civil rights leaders, you’d think it’d be smooth riding on grandpa’s dhoti to fame and fortune. Fact is, Arun Gandhi has stepped beyond Mohandas Gandhi’s shadows, experiencing the world’s brutality first-hand, and for more than three decades, has shed light on the change he wants to see by advocating for peace in his own way. He’s become an accomplished author and journalist, boasting a 30-year reporting career with the Times of India and he’s a regular contributing religion and political blogger for the Washington Post. As part of the India Speaker Series at UCF’s Global Perspectives, Ghandi’s open forum “Lessons Learned From my Grandfather: Non-Violence in a Violent World” invites our corner of the world to join in peacemaking efforts. With terrorizing images of beaten Arab Spring patriots and bloodied dictators fresh in our minds, we have a feeling Grandpa Gandhi would also encourage a listen. – Aimee Vitek (3 p.m. at UCF Student Union, University of Central Florida; free; 407-823-0688;
