Maxine Rude: Europe Displaced 1945-46

Photographer Maxine Rude may not be as well-known as Lee Miller or Dorothea Lange, but her unblinking documentary eye and her bravery in proximity to the chaotic disarrangements of war place her in the same pantheon. All of these women documented for posterity the effects of evil, be it the economic depredations of the Dust Bowl or the evils of the Third Reich – and only by recording it can we hope to prevent evil from gaining a foothold again. This exhibition at the Holocaust Center focuses on Rude’s post-WWII work with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, recording images of “displaced persons” (a mild bureaucratic designation for miraculous survivors of genocide), but Rude kept shooting until the ’90s, documenting protesters in Tiananmen Square, a steady eye trained on the human cost of political conflict. – Jessica Bryce Young (through Jan. 12, 2012 at the Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center, 851 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland; free; 407-628-0555; holocaustedu.org)
