So what's Spike Jonze been up to lately?

Just makin' another short film.

This time, it is an animated felt effort, To Die by Your Side, done with the help of co-director Simon Cahn and fashion designer Olympia Le-Tan. It tells the story of what the illustrated book covers are up to once the book shop closes for the night. (You can watch the short film in multiple sizes by clicking here -- it is ever so slightly NSFW. )

The animation was done using hand cut felt, over 3,000 pieces of it snipped by La-Tan. A mostly silent film, MacBeth and Mina Harker (Dracula) are briefly voiced by Jonze himself and by SoKo (French singer Stéphanie Sokolinski).

It's been a while since Spike Jonze was behind the camera for a feature film. Even 2009's Where the Wild Things Are had been shot years earlier and languished in post-production while the many story and puppet problems were solved.

In the meantime, he's made a series of short films, including I'm Here, a robot drama based on The Giving Tree, and the Arcade Fire short film, Scenes from the Suburbs, as well as videos for The Beastie Boys, LCD Soundsystem and Jay-Z & Kanye West.
