Sunday, Sept. 25Red State

It wasn’t that long ago that a new Kevin Smith movie would have legitimately been an event; not exactly a mainstream happening by box-office standards, but there would hardly be a corner of the Internet in which to hide from the chatter. But now, after numerous public temper tantrums, publicity ploys and fights with critics, the filmmaker has become more of a curiosity than an auteur. The topic of Red State, Smith’s self-distributed, self-described horror film (loosely based on the Phelps family of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church) should offer more than enough to talk about, but instead it has been all about That Kevin Smith. That’s never been truer than now. Cable subscribers have been inundated for weeks with TV spots promoting Red State’s on-demand availability, complete with Smith’s pleadings to click the “buy” button so he “can send his kid to college,” and this one-night-only theatrical showing will be followed by a live Q&A simulcast. (Hence the hefty, diehards-only-assuring ticket price.) Sure, he’ll always be the guy who made Clerks and Chasing Amy, but thanks to Smith’s constant bitching – and, thus, constant reminding over the Cop Out debacle – he’ll be equally remembered for having made a movie worse than Navy Seals. – Rob Boylan (10 p.m. at Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland; $20; 407-629-0054; enzian.org)
