Selection Reminder: Three-day Fall Book Sale at Orlando Public Library!

September 16-18Fall Book Sale

Despite its Brutalist slabby-concrete exterior, the Orlando Public Library, located downtown, is pleasantly airy and inviting on the inside. The Friends of the Library bookstore, up on the third floor, raises funds for the library year-round by selling books, vinyl, DVDs, maps, magazines and other stuff that’s been donated or retired off the shelves for super-cheap – we’re talking $1.50 for hardcovers, $1 for paperbacks; LPs start at 50 cents – but during their semiannual sale, prices are halved. Discerning pickers can nab out-of-print records, oversized coffee-table tomes and dusty volumes of all sorts; parents can snatch up kiddie books and movies for cheap. To game the system more efficiently, join Friends of the Library ($15 at the door) and get first dibs in a presale that starts Thursday. We could beat the anti-megastore drum here, or appeal to your higher nature with that old “reduce, reuse, recycle” saw, but this is more about the thrill of the chase: throwing elbows to get to that Xanadu VHS tape, vintage Omni magazine or Brady Bunch cookbook before anyone else. – Jessica Bryce Young (10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday at Orlando Public Library, 101 E.
