Saturday, September 10Jules and Jim

When you’re dealing with names like Francois Truffaut, Jeanne Moreau and Oskar Werner, you know you’re talking about a film classic. But in the case of Jules and Jim, Truffaut’s most romantically remembered masterpiece, you’re talking about something so much more than a late-night TCM binge. There’s a very good reason that this tale of two men at war – literally, at first, on opposing sides of WWI; figuratively, throughout the film, over their affections for each other and the messy, unstable X-factor (Moreau) – has been referenced in the films of Cameron Crowe, Wes Anderson and Bernardo Bertolucci. If the preserved-in-amber set pieces (the trio’s pre-war bicycle ride, set to Georges Delerue’s “Le Tourbillon”; Moreau, in drag, racing the boys across a bridge) seem surface-level cutesy, not to worry: Things go downhill pretty quickly. – Justin Strout (Noon at Enzian Theater, 1300 S.
