Thursday, September 1NKF Pro Am Surf Festival

For some of you, the phrase “surf festival” may evoke unpleasant memories of fraternity-level testosterone and headache-inducing energy drink logos. Yet the NKF Pro Am Surf Festival – largely a fundraiser for the festival’s namesake, the National Kidney Foundation – is well worth the occasional sensory discomfort. Founded in 1985 by Hall of Fame surfer Rich Salick, who is now on his third transplanted kidney, this annual Cocoa Beach festival features individual and tandem surf competitions, as well as peripheral pleasures such as karate demos and a bikini contest. If you’re a God-fearing surfer and want to meet others like you, a “Christian Surfers’ Tent” will be open for worship at 7:15 a.m. If you get the urge to sleep in, remind yourself that choppy waves are the Lord’s passive-aggressive form of disapproval. – Jeff Gore (through Monday, Sept. 5 at Cocoa Beach Pier, 401 Meade Ave., Cocoa Beach; donations accepted; 800-927-9659;
