Thursday, September 1Islamic Philosophy of Science

The ebullient Arab Spring may have staggered into a summer of strife, suppression and slaughter, but Dr. Yamina Mermer wants you to think of a different “S” word when you consider the Muslim world: science. The Rollins College Thomas P. Johnson Distinguished Visiting Scholar is presenting her talk “Islamic Philosophy on Science” for free to the public tonight in the Mills Center’s Galloway Room. With one Ph.D. in theoretical physics and a second in Arabic and Islamic studies, double-Dr. Mermer seems super qualified to speak on both the physical and metaphysical sides of the topic. And as an interfaith advocate active in bringing together different religions “in a faithful conversation with each other,” she’s certain to have something to say whether you believe in Adonai, Allah or Einstein. – Seth Kubersky (6 p.m. at Mills Memorial Center, Rollins College, Winter Park; free; 407-646-2183;
