Saturday, August 27Never Not Lurking

“A rock star, a single mom, a couple of professional BMX riders, a few designers, a few bloggers and a grip of others from all over the country and right here in Central Florida – all of whom have a habit of snapping photos on their phones.” That’s show organizer Mike Altz’s description of the artists in Never Not Lurking, an exhibition of digital photography that will be the first art show in the Milk District’s new Spacebar (formerly Covert skate shop). All of the photos on display were taken on cellphones, which, by their ubiquitous presence, have created a generation of Cartier-Bressons: It’s a lot easier to catch “the decisive moment” when you’ve always, always got a tiny camera in your hand. The concept of Never Not Lurking, consciously or not, echoes E. Brady Robinson’s Transfer, currently hanging at the Cornell and reviewed in last week’s issue (“Pretty vacant,” Aug. 18); both focus on what Robinson describes as “a culture of instant and mobile image capture.” The artists of Never Not Lurking throw around a bit less jargon, but are on essentially the same trip. – Jessica Bryce Young (opening 7 p.m. at Spacebar, 2428 E.
