Saturday, August 20The Dear Hunter

It’s no surprise that this project, born out of the departure of mastermind Casey Crescenzo from hardcore Boston band the Receiving End of Sirens, employs as its moniker a variation on a movie title. After all, the Dear Hunter’s entire existence often seems like a means to Crescenzo’s auteur-like end: To construct an epic masterpiece of cinematic size. To be fair, he’s on track: From the beginning, Crescenzo has stated his intentions to tell one story through the band – something about a boy at the dawn of the 20th Century – in six acts over the course of a decade or so. He’s halfway there, having released Acts one through three from 2006 to 2009, with an unrelated nine-EP intermission, The Color Spectrum, released this summer. Bearded and hulking, Crescenzo is like the George R.R. Martin of alt-rock, casting a spell over fans with his sprawling sound, which ranges from a capella to poignantly orchestral, while remaining cagey about future details. We’re in! – Justin Strout (with Kay Kay & His Weathered Underground, O’Brother; 7 p.m. at the Social, 54 N. Orange Ave.; $12-$14; 407-246-1419;
