Saturday, August 13 - So Many Ways, Carousel Kings

Who knew Hoops Tavern had a soft side? The downtown dive bar traditionally utilized by hardcore bands and crust punks will host four pop-punk acts from up North, one of which describes itself as “Christian” and another of which advertises in its Myspace diary that “the year ended with two tours and a fire burning in their heart.” Although the aggregate lyrical material of these Yankee bands regrettably evokes the term “emo,” some of the tempo is fast, and dare we say, hard. The Carousel Kings, for instance, feature some of the same guttural guitar/double bass drum combo found in doom metal. The ticket also features three mysterious Florida bands – Collisions, Betterment and the Dead Ones – of which information is scant, but we wager that the word “heart” makes a cameo in one of their songs. – Jeff Gore (with Major League, Betterment, Collisions, the Dead Ones; 7:30 p.m. at Hoops Tavern, 47 W. Amelia St.; $6; 407-843-5618)
