Saturday, July 9 – Don Zientara

Producer and owner of the legendary Inner Ear Studios, birthplace of D.C. hardcore, Zientara could just sit back for the rest of his life collecting cred points. As the architect of seminal albums including the first studio releases from Minor Threat, Rites of Spring, Government Issue, Fugazi and Dag Nasty, straightedge punks will worship his name for the rest of time, but no, Zientara has released two of his own albums. Sixteen Ssongs owes its unique sound (and, therefore, its 7.0 on Pitchfork) to a 40-year-old Wollensack tape deck; if you are so inclined, you may get to geek out over some impressive vintage gear at this show. We’re not sure if Zientara’s appearance at the new art gallery Substance as opposed to a more established venue is because he’s got better things to do than sit around and fuck his head, hanging out with the living dead, but you could try buying him a drink and see what happens. – Jessica Bryce Young (with Marc Ganancias, Signals From Satellites; 9 p.m. at Substance, 934 N. Mills Ave.; $5)
