Hanni El Khatib has something in common with Louis Armstrong, Sammy Davis Jr. and 1930s-1940s jazz pianist Clarence Williams III: Each has sung a take on “You Rascal You,” a great old number where the vocalist makes murderous threats that waver between playing around and deadly serious. It shouldn’t come as any surprise that the San Francisco-bred, L.A.-based guitarist- singer decided to cover this song, as El Khatib’s cool, Black Keys-esque, blues-based garage rock is indebted to sounds that are decades old. Still, just because he prizes bygone music doesn’t mean that he’s particularly staid or conservative. On the contrary, his uninhibited fire creates much of his appeal. “If I can bang out a song in one take, then it’s done; whether there are fuck-ups or mistakes doesn’t really matter to me,” he told Rollo & Grady. His debut album, Will the Guns Come Out, drops this fall and hopefully devotes a lot of space to healthy fuck-ups. – Reyan Ali (with Florence & the Machine; 7 p.m. at Hard Rock Live, CityWalk at Universal Orlando; sold out; 407-351-5483; hardrocklive.com)
