Monsters on Mills Avenue: Art Power Boxes of Mills 50

Posted By on Wed, Jun 29, 2011 at 10:42 AM

If you've driven down Mills Avenue recently, you may have noticed something creative going on along the neighborhood north of downtown. As part of an urban beautification project, the Mills 50 organization invited artists to decorate the city-owned power boxes found along sidewalks in the area. The project, which C2G blogged about in May, now includes at least 10 uniquely decorated boxes. Some of the artists involved include: Danny Rodriguez (Colonial & Mills), Lauren Galant (Colonial & Hyer), Michael Fajardo (Mills & Lake Highland), Lee Vandergrift (Colonial & Ferncreek), Harry Glotfelty (Colonial & Shine and Mills & Marks).[gallery columns="2" orderby="title"]

One of the last and largest of the “art boxes” was decorated this week by artist Genevieve Bernard at the corner of Virginia and Mills. Genevieve is curator of education at the Mennello Museum and artistic director of Voci Dance (she also happens to be this writer's wife). Her signature colorful “monster” designs can been seen by passing motorists now and forever... or at least until the Floridian elements inevitably eat away the paint.

Here's a gallery of photographic evidence documenting the 5-hour process involved in painting the power box.
