Tuesday, June 7PJ Bond

Any time a former member of an emo band strikes out on his own and goes acoustic is a good time for cynicism. In the case of PJ Bond, a little listener caution seemed a few years ago like a perfectly fitting reaction: His New Jersey band, Outsmarting Simon, wasn’t that great to begin with and Bond’s YouTube strummings, while firmly sincere, didn’t indicate much soulful truth. That all changed after the release of his debut album, You Didn’t Know I Was Alphabetical, a triumph of piercing storytelling, down-South atmosphere and melodic surprises. Bond, it seems, is the real deal, and his non-stop journeyman status ever since has only grown his talent (and beard and hair). Bond’s latest EP, 22 April: Vienna, Austria proves that he’s an artist in bloom. – Justin Strout (with Kyle Cox, Brian McGee, Johnny Knuckles, Among Giants; 9 p.m. at Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave.; $5-$7; 407-898-5803; willspub.org)
