Lady Lazarus

Equal parts chaos and reassurance, Savannah, Ga.’s Lady Lazarus lets her piano set an apocalyptic mood – all syncopated madness and shore-crashing finality – while her knowing, gentle voice calms things just enough for some simple truth to break through. I first listened to the low-key singer’s music while in the post-haze of a screening of Terrence Malick’s new film, Tree of Life, and while I’m embargoed from saying much about that film, I can say that Lazarus’ lo-fi debut, Mantic, with its home-recorded warmth, organic beauty and universal scope, is the perfect companion to any Malick movie. Watch Badlands, then lose yourself in Mantic. Better yet, go see Lady Lazarus live in our backyard tonight, with dream-pop locals Saskatchewan making their live debut. – Justin Strout (with Saskatchewan, A.T.T.I.C, Marmalade; 9 p.m. at Stardust Video & Coffee, 1842 E.
