This afternoon, the UCF Board of Trustees voted in favor of taking on the responsibility of becoming Central Florida's newest flagship PBS station. The school's WUCF TV would pick up broadcasting PBS programming beginning July 1, immediately after WMFE, the current PBS station in the region, passes its license on to Christian broadcasting company Community Educators of Orlando.

Supporters wearing PBS buttons helped fill the Live Oak Room where the board met and waited anxiously for the verdict. The board vote was unanimous in favor of taking on responsibility for PBS broadcasting.

In April, UCF student Anna Eskamani, who founded a Keep PBS in Orlando campaign last month, wrote an editorial in the Central Florida Future urging the school to adopt PBS.

The channel would cover 10 counties and its programming will be expected to reach 1.5 million households.
