Thursday, April 28Cold War Kids

As much fun as it was several years back to watch Cold War Kids, a ragtag, loosely bluesy California group, get swept up out of nowhere and put through the hype machine, it’s been an equally good time watching that same machine spit them back out. Lately, the band’s sound has veered dramatically toward radio-friendly terrain, eliciting comparisons to Kings of Leon and even Rob Thomas by music crits. Do they deserve to be slagged off? Well, yes and no: For their latest album, Mine Is Yours, the band recruited Kings of Leon producer Jacquire King to give their already pop-leaning rock an even glossier shine. But to be fair, Kings of Leon are still very popular, and Rob Thomas has maintained a career far longer than anyone anticipated. Hooky singalongs aren’t easy to come up with, and staying near the top of the buzz-band list is even tougher – at some point, you go for broke or fade away. Judging by the crowds Cold War Kids are drawing, it’s hard to blame them. Especially when you’re busy singing along. –Justin Strout (7:30 p.m. at House of Blues, Downtown Disney West Side, Lake Buena Vista; $15.25-$18.25; 407-934-2583; hob.com)
