Early Oscar frontrunners for 2012

Posted By on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 11:44 AM

Here are some forthcoming releases that are already racking up big awards buzz.

The Kinks’ Screech – Hoping to avoid the sophomore jinx, Tom Hooper takes a detour into Charlie Kaufman-style pop-culture metaphysics. In an alternate reality not all that unlike our own, Ray Davies leaves The Kinks and is replaced by Saved by the Bell’s Dustin “Screech” Diamond. Meanwhile, Davies gets to go on Celebrity Fit Club and extol the virtues of his penis.

Reception – Your local VFW hall is the scene of the crime in this tandem sequel to Inception and Wedding Crashers. Panicked that his pal’s impending nuptials will drive a wedge in their bromance, Vince Vaughn enters Owen Wilson’s subconscious to convince him he’d rather off himself than get hitched. Oops

somebody got there first!

Cheaper to Focker – Will Oscar’s notorious reluctance to embrace the funny stuff end when the next round of Stiller/De Niro hijinks reaches theaters? Only if the Golden Globes don’t throw Best Comedy to something by Michael Haneke. Because you know the HFPA calls the shots for all those guys.

The One-Drop Rule Says I’m a Black Swan – Halle Berry, still playin’ that race card like it’s Community Chest.

The Social Netflix -- Law & Order’s Dick Wolf profiles the bold young visionaries who changed the face of movie rental, brought Blockbuster low and enabled a grateful nation to masturbate to Born Into Brothels for an entire week without incurring a late fee. The death-of-retail angle should be a big hit with socially conscious Academy voters – unless they instead show their love to the similarly themed Borders Without Borders, a documentary short about humanitarian efforts to feed America’s laid-off bookstore employees.
