Glapagos: The Directorâ??s Cut

2 Candy Bars and a $5 Bill Production (Kissimmee FL)

Back in 1990, Schwarzeneggerâ??s Total Recall promised us virtual vacations featuring all the fun of real travel without the inconvenience (plus violent nookie with Sharon Stone). I still havenâ??t liberated the mutants on Mars, but Basso Voche Travel (motto: â??if you are with Basso Voche, you canâ??t afford anything elseâ?) has the next best thing with their shoestring simulation of a Galapagos island getaway.

On our voyage, Signor Basson Voche (Michael Marzella) narrates in subsonic stentorian tones as his assistants Alto, Cephus, and Corto (Eddie Wilder, Joe Wesson, Tony Lopez) portray the passing wildlife. The trio make excellent non-verbal clowns with their Jerry Lewis-like false teeth and rubber faces â?? director Lopezâ??s caterpillar eyebrows seem about to crawl right off his head. With loveably low-fi props they impersonate storage-bin-shelled tortoises, sock-puppet albatrosses, and skakeboard-sliding sea lions. Classical music and charmingly clumsy choreography results in a ridiculous underwater ballet and other comic scenarios reminiscent of a golden-age Looney Tunes cartoon.

This harmlessly hilarious show gave me more gentle giggles than gutbusting guffaws, but it was consistently cute and didnâ??t wear out its welcome. If youâ??ve got a kid (or you are a kid) at the age where â??pull my fingerâ? is the greatest joke ever, this is the show to take them to.
