Middlebrow mediocrities like You’ve Got Mail look like canonized masterpieces next to P.S. I Love You, a romantic dramedy that stumbles through its excruciatingly Oscar-padded 126-minute running time with no end in sight. Holly Kennedy (Hilary Swank, unappealing as ever) is married to Gerry (Gerard Butler), an Irish musician who suddenly dies. She tries to renew her life with the help of a series of packages and letters her husband arranged to be mailed after his death, causing her to go clubbing, relive a painful experience at a karaoke bar, buy sexy clothes and even take a trip – to where else but Ireland (cue the Celtic instrumentals). In scenes both there and in Holly’s native New York, the film is as visually pedestrian as it is narratively saccharine: a contrived, shrill fantasyland somewhere between soapy sentiment and sitcom prattle.
