Bombs, the Taliban, vague “land collapse”; we need an indie rapper, stat! Social paranoia has bred rap’s own gallery of evangelicals, cloaking below-par upstarts in an impenetrable force field where no listener (or critic) can stain their meticulously patched backpacks. Nasally voiced frontman Jon D pours on the apocalyptic worst-case scenarios, but before we can shake in our boots, reassures, “I know it’s dark but I’m comin’ with that light when I spark.” I see, outlining imminent terror but quickly following with savior reassurance? George Bush has the same trick and frankly, Ol’ Chuckles-in-chief does it better. Producer Roland “Bob-J” Llapitan is sample-free and cinematic with his layers, but the group is insistent on their “duo” status, which is likely bred more of Jon D’s sense of self-preservation than creative male bonding.
