German DJ/producer Shantel is just a guy with a sharp ear and a knack for transforming ethnic sounds into the next big European club craze. A veteran of the Frankfurt techno scene, he became inspired by the music of the Bucovina region (now split between Romania and the Ukraine) and married electronica with buoyant Balkan brass on his Bucovina Night parties and albums. His ingenious mash-ups put him at the forefront of the Balkan remix sound. On Disko Partizani, his first solo outing in seven years, Shantel widens the sonic terrain and draws from a range of Balkan and Eastern European roots. Warbling horns intermingle with pulsating beats and squelchy synths. Still more internationalism kicks in as English lyrics are peppered throughout. Delivered in a deadpan drone, the fourth track’s “Yabadabadai. Yabobobaboi. I wanna be your disko boy. Wanna dance with you. Wanna hold you tight. Wanna make you mine tonight …” suggests that Shantel’s talent lies in throwing a party and not taking himself too seriously.
