Earlier this year, this loose collective of “alternative comics” released a DVD that included both the eponymous documentary and footage of a night of performances at San Francisco’s El Rey Theater. This month, they’re releasing a straight performance-oriented DVD culled from a night at L.A’s Troubadour. Without the documentary vibe of the earlier film, it’s solely up to these hipster comedians to keep your attention, and the fast-paced two hours of hilarious non-jokes and riffing, self-indulgent humor does just that. With comics like Maria Bamford, David Cross, Patton Oswalt and Zach Galifianakis providing the “star power,” less-known (but sometimes more funny) comedians are given the opportunity to shine here. Blaine Capatch, Jon Benjamin, Jasper Redd and Dana Gould don’t have the Sub Pop recording contracts and Ratatouille voice-over work that the “big” names do, but they more than earn their spots in the show, garnering laughs that should shame Oswalt into never trotting out that George Lucas bit again.
