An adaptation of the best-selling novel about a directionless recent college grad who spends a summer nannying for a Manhattan couple, The Nanny Diaries is ultimately undone by an undeveloped lead character played by an equally underwhelming Scarlett Johansson. Since she came to attention in 2001, the actress has managed to carry one movie to date, Lost in Translation, and somehow Hollywood has taken director Sofia Coppola's ability to get a great performance out of even the dullest of actors to mean that Johansson should be anything more than a supporting player. The Nanny Diaries is helmed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the duo behind American Splendor, but sadly, their latest venture is the opposite of that high-water mark; The Nanny Diaries is as glossy and superficial as the society it fails to satirize adequately (or comedically). Nevertheless, there are glimmers of something special in the performance of Chris Evans as a love interest; the pretty-boy actor continues to surprise, as he did in Sunshine, and manages to actually elicit something out of Johansson that bears a semblance to life. It's too bad he couldn't have been the nanny.
