'God's lonely manâ? sure has a lot of company on this definitive two-disc set. As if a pristine transfer of Scorsese's urban purgatory masterpiece weren't enough, there's also enough meaty bonus material to rival any university archive. Included are commentary tracks by screenwriter Paul Schrader and film scholar Robert Kolker, a 'making ofâ? featurette that's more than half as long as the film, side-by-side comparisons of finished shots with Scorsese's scribbled storyboards, scans of composer Bernard Herrmann's handwritten sheet music of the jazzy score and a street map comparing present-day Manhattan locations with how they appeared in 1975. The most deluxe feature of all is that every page of the screenplay is embedded in an excellent interactive feature allowing viewers to flip back and forth between written word and finished movie. Particularly memorable is the immortal scene that is rendered simply in the script as 'Travis practices fast-drawing the .38 Special from his holster and firing it.â? All those goodies provide the perfect garnish to an unassailably perfect piece of cinema that still holds up three decades later in all its brutal and alienated glory.
