This is Fog's first album to feature a full-time band, and the depth shows. Otherworldly and tuneful, it whirs with a thrilling, perpetual sense of caprice and dynamism. Embracing lo-fi, folk, noise and glitch, their liberated, avant-rock sound is almost beyond genre. But, for all its shape-shifting, it never rambles. The language swings wildly, but a coherent balance grounds it. The rhythmic, thoroughly atmospheric music surprises with unpredictable turns yet still strokes the soul with the warmth of its excellent melodies. Layers of sonic gauze are often pierced by moments of crystalline lucidity, the prime case being 'We Will Have Vanished,â? whose churning haze is broken by the sun of a propulsive beat three minutes in. The two wonderful tricks managed here are achieving angularity that's dynamic but not difficult and crafting music that's immediate but has the capacity to continually unfold. Seldom does a trip to the edge feel as intuitive and natural as in this stirring and forward-thinking work.
