Every cliché one could expect out of a movie about a women's hockey team from India and their world-championship dream is present in Chak De! India. There's Shahrukh Khan as the coach in need of redemption, the ragtag group of athletes with no real hope of success and frequent doses of hyperactive nationalism. There's also the predictable story arc that has the girls struggling to overcome regional differences, their own egos and institutional sexism in order to make it to the big game where they ... well, you figure it out. Still, as by-the-numbers as Chak De! is, it manages to be both engrossing and occasionally nuanced. SRK's remarkably restrained performance (his eyes only well up with tears twice) is filled with peculiar tics and varying degrees of intensity that give real life to the coach, while the snappy dialogue of the players allows each of them to be a little more than just standard sports-movie archetypes.
