Almost a decade since their debut, UNKLE finally strolls along with this third album. In only a triad of LPs, though, James Lavelle's project has spanned the spectrum. Known for breaking ground in trip-hop, the mood-rich U.K. act now unleashes a distinctly rock-minded effort whose instrumentation is played mostly live by members of quality bands like Eagles of Death Metal, Autolux and the Duke Spirit. Furthermore, his tradition of studding albums with heavyweights continues here with Josh Homme, the Cult's Ian Astbury and Massive Attack's 3D. Though the ambitious record departs stylistically, the music retains their signature language. It's still all about panorama and nihilistic density. Combining dance music dynamics and rock grit, the thick, claustrophobic 'Restlessâ? is as slamming as it is atmospheric. The epic 'Chemistryâ? rides trip-hop sweeps that are pure cinema, only to end in a roiling freakout of guitar ferocity. Like Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie, Lavelle is proving to be one of the rare artists who can transcend genre limitations convincingly.
