Grand National sounded familiar on their dance-y ' but sometimes acoustic ' debut, Kicking the National Habit, but there's a more diverse track list on their follow-up, A Drink & a Quick Decision. Having been in a Police cover band prior to forming Grand National, the duo communicated its taste for melodies made popular by Sting & Co. on Kicking; any subtle references to Synchronicity have vanished in favor of a more authentic Grand National sound. 'Joker and Clownâ? is drunken, friendly pop, but amid near club-bangers 'Cut by the Brakesâ? and 'By the Time I Get Home There Won't Be Much of a Place for Me,â? A Drink's hoisted-Bic balladry adds to the LP's distinctive shifts. Maybe cover-band people aren't always worthless dolts thieving tavern residencies from hard-working original bands.
