Irish writer/director John Carney's new musical, Once, tells his semi-autobiographical story of two broken hearts in search of repair. Glen Hansard, bandmate of Carney (both were members of Irish band the Frames) plays the lead as a part-time street musician/part-time vacuum repairman who befriends an immigrant girl (Markéta Irglová). Music is the commonality that brings them together and the outlet where they go to cope with the heartache left behind from past relationships. The result is a beautifully haunting soundtrack that fills your mind long after the credits roll. Carney does an incredible job of balancing the music within the film, so viewers become lost in the characters and their story. The chemistry between Hansard and Irglová flows from the screen, easily creating one of the most romantic films of our generation. Independently redefining this classic genre, Once is a musical that movingly tells a realistic love story.
