Surf's Up proves to be a more enjoyable experience than one would expect heading into the theater, especially given its ho-hum premise about penguins competing in a surf contest and, oh yeah, this being the second animated penguin movie in less than a year. Still, it delivers, mostly due to some unexpected and wickedly dark humor that works because of the innovative documentary style of the story (at least for animated flicks it's innovative). It seems young Cody Maverick, a penguin who dreams of one day winning and mattering like legendary surfer Big Z, is being followed as part of a reality show, and so whole new arenas of comedy are opened up that are usually reserved for Christopher Guest's mockumentaries. When Maverick finally gets his shot, he ultimately discovers, with the help of a fat, out-of-shape Big Z, that surfing isn't about winning. It's about having fun. Awww. Don't worry, the laughs make up for the lame premise.
