Spinal Tap's amps went to 11. Dinosaur Jr.'s go to 17. Still. The only thing more ridiculous than the volume at which they began each show was the increasing volume that occurred as it progressed. It was no coincidence that J Mascis first thanks his gear techs and their companies on the inner sleeve of Beyond, the first Dinosaur Jr. album since 1988's Bug to include the original members ' guitarist Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph. Mascis' guitar tone dominated the Dino Jr. sound ' more so than any songwriterly bent ' since the band's inception. Personal conflicts within Dino Jr. were the stories of legend, so the arrival of a new studio album from the establishing trio is big news. Dinosaur's return material is every bit as loud and guitar-heavy as You're Living All Over Me and Bug. There may be nothing as definitive as 'Freak Sceneâ? or 'Repulsion,â? but 'Almost Ready,â? 'Pick Me Upâ? and 'We're Not Aloneâ? pack enough guitar to make it the real thing.
