Is it possible to boogie and sing about the need for love from a good woman without turning to parody? Is there a rock riff you can hammer down without being derivative? Can you wear your hair shaggy and behave as if the big bad world hasn't wised you up over years of touring and three studio albums? Well, after a half-dozen spins of the Kings of Leon's new album the answer doesn't seem any closer. This rock music is an old form after 50 years and the Stones sure recycled their share of Chuck Berry. If you're willing to scale back your expectations and enjoy a cute riff, a snarky turn of phrase and the genuine firepower that guys who tour together find over time, then Times should serve as a welcome refresher course in wanton rockers, ballads and midtempos (which you always imagined would've stayed more in vogue after everyone absorbed Sticky Fingers). 'Fans,â? 'The Runnerâ? and the seven-minute opener, 'Knocked Up,â? are all a heckuva lot more fun than the Black Crowes ever were.
