In the nonsense world of First Snow, a lousy Twilight Zone premise stretched mercilessly to 121 minutes, the life of Guy Pearce's nondescript protagonist is shaken up by an ominous psychic reading from an old kook in an Albuquerque trailer: He won't live past the first snow. Suddenly everything from a former business buddy's practical joke to the rattling sound of a cleaning lady pushing her cart outside his hotel room represents a potential death threat. A director like Roman Polanski or Christopher Nolan might have made a gripping existential thriller out of the idea, but in the leaden, borderline-inept hands of first-time director Mark Fergus, the project feels written and storyboarded over a few lunch breaks. Fergus wrote this dud with Hawk Ostby, a team that somehow scored a brilliant adaptation of Children of Men last year. All that magic is gone here, the stilted dialogue no more believable than if written by a moderately bright middle-schooler with no experience of how the world works.
