Will Ferrell has more range than his detractors will admit. But since Melinda and Melinda and Stranger Than Fiction didn't make any money, it's no surprise he keeps returning to the high- concept goofball comedy over and over again, adding more grist to the mill for his unamused critics. Driven by the same (il)logic as Anchorman and Talladega Nights, the premise for Blades of Glory again situates Ferrell in a distinctive, ripe-for-parody profession and lets the screenwriters' limitless imaginations and a stellar supporting cast carry the water. Ferrell has the WWE swagger to rival Olympic skater Jon Heder's lissome femininity, but after an on-ice brawl causes them both to be banned from singles competition for life, the nemeses decide to team up as the sport's first all-male couple to finally win the gold. Enter the requisite amounts of uncomfortable manhood-questioning and homoerotic choreography, most of which is humorous, even if finding queer subtext in male ice skating is like shooting gay fish in a barrel. Finding it in a NASCAR parody is more pointed, but while Blades of Glory never reaches Talladega inspiration and while the action scenes are an arbitrary bore next to the script's verbal zingers, it's hard to dislike a movie that has the funniest decapitation gag in years.
