Channel 6 blew it

Posted on Thu, Feb 8, 2007 at 2:30 PM

This just in: Channel 6's motion to dissolve the injunction against them reporting on the much-hyped "Guetzloe files" has been denied. In other words, they are still not legally allowed to report on the documents.

Which is stupid on many, many levels. No court should be telling a news organization what they can and can't broadcast. Worse still, no news organization should be paying the slightest attention to such an injuction in the first place. Ever heard of "prior restraint"? The Pentagon Papers ring a bell?

Then again, this was never really about journalism anyway; it was about hype. If Channel 6 had something they should have put it on the air, full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes. You either get sued, or you don't, after the fact. Instead the station hyped their big stash o' documents as the story, likely because they have no story. And now they are acting like whipped puppies when a judge tells them what they can and can't broadcast.

Journalism at its worst.
