Since busting out as Hella in 2001, the Cali duo of Spencer Seim (guitars) and Zack Hill (drum kit) have done it all and then some. Despite failing to garner the relative acclaim of, say, like-minded peers Lightning Bolt, they've kept their speedy, cartoonish churn flowing and their schedule full; in addition to full-lengths, EPs and myriad side projects, these self-taught spazzoids dared to lash together two solo albums Speakerboxxx/The Love Below'style and make an acoustic record. The only place left to go was to fortify the ranks; with There's No 666 in Outer Space, they have, by adding a singer, a second axman and a bassist. The new sound, regrettably, is more Blonde Redhead or Pattern is Movement than John Zorn. 'The Ungrateful Dead,â? for example, surges and jacks with stop-on-a-dime precision ' it's as though the quintet were conjoined and plummeting on a bungee cord that never stops bouncing.
