This single disc collects the five most important and enduring Kenneth Anger shorts from 1947 to 1954, including the notorious homoerotic dreamfilm Fireworks. The iconoclastic avant-garde experimentalist has been an influence on virtually every director who's seen his movies, and throughout this DVD, you encounter sequences that predate the late-period Rainer Werner Fassbinder canon, Fellini's Satyricon, Kundun, Eyes Wide Shut and, I would argue, Pan's Labyrinth. Anger's films have been revised often, sometimes not for the better, but these painstakingly restored versions are the ones most true to his vision. The pop songs bopping on the soundtrack of Rabbit's Moon prophesize music videos, while a Vivaldi overture accentuates the beautiful blue baroque-ness of Eaux d'Artifice. Anger himself provides commentary on each title, but his remarks are as much dryly descriptive as stylistically illuminating. The most interesting tidbit: The first person to buy a print of Fireworks was Alfred Kinsey, who attended the film's debut midnight screening and wanted a copy for the library of his Institute of Sex Research at the University of Indiana.
