It's easy to dismiss director Joe Carnahan's Smokin' Aces as nothing but brainless violence desperately trying to suck whatever milk is left from Quentin Tarantino's swollen tits. But this shoot-'em-up about a half-dozen hitmen trying to take out a mob boss before he snitches is a lot more than it seems, even if you have to wait until the last five minutes to realize just how much more that is and just how integral the violence is to Carnahan's point. What point is that? Well, let's just say Carnahan ain't exactly a fan of the war in Iraq.
