With Pan's Labyrinth, director Guillermo del Toro taps the same magical vein that made his Devil's Backbone so memorable. The deceptively adult fantasy ' about a girl named Ofelia who escapes from the horrors perpetrated by her stepfather during the twilight of the Spanish Civil War by slipping into a massive stone labyrinth and her imagination ' defines via mythical metaphors, motifs and encounters why so many Spaniards resisted Generalissimo Franco. While its oppressive darkness and gruesome violence can be overwhelming, the film allows viewers to discover what's on the other side of the experience, and it is worth the stomach-churning journey.
