A single-disc release that's as packed as a double, Lionsgate's unrated Descent DVD shouldn't disappoint fans of one of the best horror films in recent memory. The inescapable terror of the six girls' spiral into hell after a botched caving expedition works best in a cinema ' where the spectator, too, has no outlet ' but this transfer brings out all of the aural spine-tinglers and dynamic lighting that made this plunge into the abyss the most claustrophobic and unrelenting genre exercise of 2006. The 40-minute Descent: Beneath the Scenes is an informative and surprisingly funny examination of every angle of production. A seven-minute interview with director Neil Marshall weighs the pros and cons of the tricky U.K. and short U.S. endings; two commentaries, a blooper reel, deleted/extended scenes and storyboards make this purchase a must for horror buffs and aspiring filmmakers.
