The deep orchestral washes with which Chris Leary rounds Lemodie's diverse electronica are the album's easiest digested components. Ochre ' a name Leary chose to record under when he was a music student ' is cheery and bright in his post-academic achievements on Lemodie, even if his loose-knit, bleary-eyed bleeps on tracks like 'Open Topâ? or 'Oneiristâ? come from the Boards of Canada playbook. While Leary's songs sometimes near eight minutes, he isn't dawdling in loops and repetition; his scattershot beats and laptop synths are usually still morphing, and there isn't much lag. Darker downtempo scenarios in 'Beneath Fleeting Visionsâ? work to offset the high-end chirps and frazzled rhythms in cuts like 'Anomie.â? Elegant, chamber-string breaks like those that precede the final moments of opener '111â? paint Leary as a prim-attired conductor: A grandiose English garden melody lifts '111â? from its quirky, tranced-out electropop beat and steers Leary away from unadventurous recreation.
