Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny really a mediocre movie, or is it just the first casualty of our forever changed, post-Borat comedy standards? Jack Black is on autopilot, once again perpetuating a juvenile infatuation with arena-rock mystique, but Kyle Gass' and his own innocent exuberance is admirable. In fact, this stupefying buddy movie has uproarious gags, most of them due to the movie's mock-rock-opera conceit, which finds the heroes singing their way from abusive childhoods through pathetic open-mic gigs. Finally, they head off on a quest to find the eponymous pick that turns inferior musicians into guitar gods. Their journey culminates, as all journeys should, into a pivotal battle with a 20-foot Satan played by Dave Grohl. You have to trudge through plenty of hackneyed plot points and tired action scenes to enjoy the original flair, though, so this is solipsistic, infantile stuff any way you tune it.
