Damien Jurado

And Now That I'm in Your Shadow (Secretly Canadian) Damien Jurado is no longer a lonely singer-songwriter, but a three-piece band. Nonetheless, Jurado could add 11 members and still fit his sound inside a closet. There isn't a big noise to be heard on his latest album, the first installment of a two-part, 26-song cycle. It's all quiet tunes gently picked and sung in mournful harmonies with Jenna Conrad, who adds her cello, the international instrument of mourning. Jurado tells stories you can barely hear. The characters in the songs drift like spirits in the night, usually cheaters who call other men's wives 'sweetheart,â? not with swagger, but with a lonely fate awaiting them. These are people who live in cramped apartments and trailer homes on the sides of ugly highways, playing losing lotto numbers and driving their moms' cars. In the end what is remembered are not story lines, but the modest hum, the gentle folding of this minimalist trio coming together at the campfire to spook you out.
