Showing a marked improvement in image and sound over the previous DVD release, this two-disc reissue of A Nightmare on Elm Street includes the old version's enlightening commentary, plus a newly recorded one and three featurettes. The House That Freddy Built: The Legacy of New Line Horror has enough humor, insight and honest self-effacement that you'll almost forget it's a 20-minute shill for the eponymous little studio that could. Night Terrors: The Origins of Wes Craven's Nightmare is a plausibly frightening look at the dreamscape, using Jungian psychiatrists as well as film theorists to add credibility to an exposé of the terrifying mysteries and real-life catastrophes associated with nightmares. In fact, the brilliant concept of Nightmare was spawned by a series of shocking newspaper articles read by Craven, according to the outstanding documentary Never Sleep Again. Trivia for Freddy fanboys and disposable alternate endings round out this set, which is well worth the double dip. Twenty-two years later, Craven's commercial breakthrough still has the power to disturb and provoke.
