Like the film versions of such classic stage musicals as Guys and Dolls and Carousel, Grease (1978) abounds with awesome songs and a dynamite cast but suffers from flat-footed direction. Somehow, that didn't prevent it from becoming one of the highest-grossing movie musicals ever made. The new 'Rockin' Rydell Editionâ? DVD comes packaged in a black faux-leather jacket (with zipper) and boasts another round of digital remastering. Among the bonus features are singalong versions of musical numbers, including 'Summer Nights,â? 'Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee,â? 'You're the One That I Wantâ? and, of course, 'Beauty School Dropout,â? variously sung by Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta, Frankie Avalon and others. In one featurette, Stockard Channing, who played potty-mouth tough girl Rizzo, reveals that her famous make-out bruise was bestowed on her neck by Jeff Conaway, who played her boyfriend; that, of course, makes it a genuine hickey from the actual Kenickie.
