I root for guys like this: guys who make weird, creaky music that's beholden to no known genre. No generic blues licks. No heavy-metal breast-beating. No pitch-corrected emo singing from a Hallmarked heart. No gratuitous hip-hop beats. Just the odd day-to-day ruminations of a guy who couldn't get hired at a straight job if he shot any higher than the mailroom. But I am also a listener, and I need to be entertained. I need to be shaken once in a while by something beyond mere pleasantness. Yes, Tom Waits guests on a track left over from the sessions of Sparklehorse's previous album. Other namedrop-worthy guests (Dangermouse, the Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd) are here, too. But it doesn't change a thing. Mark Linkous still can't sing. (Few psychedelic rangers can.) Maybe that's why he spends most of his time whispering. And that's why I stopped listening. Meet me more than halfway next time, OK?
