For a while, Flyboys is just mindless, unintentional hilarity. There's not a single fresh scene in this painfully long film, which boasts no real characters, only archetypes manufactured to represent various dispositions and social strata ' the brash, reckless one; the spoiled rich one; the religious one; the goofy one; the token black one, etc. Not a single note of Flyboys is authentic; the overuse of green screen is so obvious that even the people look like CGI concoctions. But about halfway through this story ' a group of young American go-getters who enlist in the fledgling French air force in the early days of World War I ' the movie becomes an offensive piece of war propaganda. The directing is still incompetent, the dialogue still ridiculous and the cinematography still superficial, but the treatment goes repulsively jingoistic when the bombs start falling in romantic slo-mo to glorious symphonic swells.
