In 2004, a little-known instrumentalist going by Science Fiction dropped the nom de plume, grabbed the microphone and got very real. The lyrical debut One Day, Everything Changed detailed Wale Oyejide's journey of self, from his birth country of Nigeria to the States, with a few detours along the way for story's sake. While awaiting his next hitchhiker's entry, Oyejide's followers can fill in some gaps for themselves on this loose collection of shorts and afterthoughts. Africa Hot! shoulders far less weightiness than One Day, while offering peeks into Oyejide's current obsessions: AIDS (the weirdly danceable 'H.I.V.â? is an unintentionally Bush-baiting call for Africans to protect themselves), a greater hip-hop influence (the razor-sharp 'Keep Shiningâ?) and chunkier bass lines ('Jump and Funkâ? should come with a warning). Oyejide is probably known more for his overworked passport than his musical outings so far, but expect that to change by his next full-length, and in the meantime enjoy any lark he allows us in on.
